How to Rescreen a Window in 3 Quick & Easy Steps
Today, I'm going to show you how to rescreen a window. It's a handy skill to have, especially if you want to save some money and DIY instead of calling in a professional.
Tools and Materials
- Screening material
- Spline (the rubber cord that holds the screen in place)
- Screen roller
- Tape measure
- Sharp scissors or utility knife
How to rescreen a window
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Screen and Spline Material
First measure the size of the window opening. Take your tape measure and carefully measure both the width and height of the window frame. Once you have your measurements, add a few inches to each side to ensure you have enough material to work with.
Next, take your screen material and lay it out flat on a clean, flat surface. Use your measurements to cut the screen material to the appropriate size. Make sure to use sharp scissors or a utility knife to get clean cuts.
Measure the length of each side of the window frame where the screen will be installed. Again, add a few inches to each measurement to ensure you have enough spline to work with.
Using your scissors or utility knife, carefully cut the spline to the measured lengths.
Step 2: Install the Screen Material
With your screen material and spline cut to size, it's time to start the installation process. Begin by placing the screen material over the window frame, ensuring that it covers the entire opening.
Next, take your spline and start pressing it into the groove around the edge of the window frame. Use your screen roller to help push the spline into place, ensuring a snug fit.
As you work your way around the window frame, make sure to pull the screen material tight. This will help prevent any wrinkles or sagging once the installation is complete.
Continue to press the spline into the groove, keeping the screen material taut as you go.
Step 3: Trim Excess Material
Once you've installed the screen material and spline around the entire window frame, it's time to trim any excess material.
Use a razor blade or utility knife to carefully trim away any overhanging screen material, being careful not to cut into the spline or window frame.
