DIY Tank Top Organizer: A Simple Closet Hack That Saves Space

Maximize space and keep your tops organized!
Tired of digging through a jumbled mess of tank tops every morning? I was, too! No matter how neatly I folded them, they always ended up squished and wrinkled.
That’s why I created this simple tank top organizer using basic hangers and zip ties. It keeps my tops organized, easy to see, and—best of all—takes up hardly any closet space.

1. Pair Up the Hangers
Start by taking your hangers and grouping them into sets of two.
You’ll be creating three sets of double hangers.
2. Attach the Hangers with Zip Ties
Use zip ties to connect each pair of hangers back-to-back.
Where you place the zip ties will depend on the shape of your hangers, but here’s what worked for me:
- One zip tie through the small hole at the top.
- One on each side near the bottom hooks.
Pull the zip ties tight, then snip off the excess.
3. Connect the Sets Vertically
Now, it’s time to build your hanging structure! You’ll be stacking the three hanger sets vertically, securing them with zip ties in two key spots:
Attach the top hanger to the middle hanger by threading a zip tie through the bar of the top hanger and the top hole of the middle hanger.
Attach the middle hanger to the bottom hanger the same way—zip tying the bar of the middle hanger to the top hole of the bottom hanger.
For extra security, add a second zip tie between each connection to ensure they stay firmly in place.
Once all three sections are connected, pull the zip ties tight and trim off the excess.
4. Hang Your Tank Tops
Now, grab your tank tops and start hanging! You can fit two per hanger, one on each side.
If you want, you can even layer them for seasonal storage—lightweight summer tanks in front, heavier layering tanks in back.

This is a great idea but I’ve never seen hangars like these hangars for this project.

For those that live in the USA and have the standard plastic tube hangers the tabs from wet cat/dog food or soup/fruit can tabs fit the standard plastic tube of a hanger. I found a soda pop can tab only fit wire or tops of wood hangers. ZIp ties would work on plastic hangers but you need to postion differently. A multi level pant hanger would also work. I use a multi pant hanger to drape sun dresses over in closet.
