Yes, they do it all the time on tv. Just be sure to protect your floors and hang plastic over doorways to limit the amount of dust through the house. Have a big shop-vac handy to vacuum dust frequently.

Do you plan to fill in the flooring with tile once the raised hearth is removed? There should be something fire proof in front of the fire box if you are burning wood.

I am not a fireplace fan. Burning wood pollutes the air and too often it hogs up too much of a room to allow for good furniture placement. But it really seems to be a feature that buyers want. Perhaps if you remove the hearth and blend the rest into the room with paint you can free yourself of it somewhat.

Hi Tammy: Do you have a picture of what you are talking about? That sure would help :) Thanks

Are you talking about the hearth? It can be removed,

To remove a brick hearth, you'll need to break the bond between the hearth and the surrounding structure and then carefully remove the bricks individually. This process involves using tools like a chisel, hammer, and possibly a sledgehammer, and it's recommended to start from the top layer and work your way down. Always prioritize safety by using appropriate protective gear and taking precautions against falling debris. Remember when you do that you will need to have additional flooring to fill in the space of the hearth.

  • Hi Tammy! To remove brick fireplace "seating", start by determining if it's a separate structure or part of the fireplace itself. If separate, you can often remove it by chipping away at the mortar with a chisel and hammer, then carefully prying the pieces loose. If it's integrated with the fireplace, you may need to carefully remove bricks from the front, starting at the top and working your way down. For more complex situations, or if you're dealing with a gas fireplace, consider consulting a professional.

Hi Tammy: Can you please provide a picture so that we can see the area you are discussing? Thanks.

  • Lots of great responses here, I think the biggest challenge is filing the floor space after you remove the seating area bricks. Do you have wood, tile, carpet that you have to match? Will you be replacing the flooring in the room, etc...

Hi Tammy, hope this helps you. You will want to consult with an expert so you know how to go about this. It can be done, you can also just cover the brick with a paneling.
