  • Can you post a photo? I would use a 4 x 8 sheet of lattice and use cable ties to fasten. Many use chicken wire, but I don't, as they can get a paw stuck and hurt themselves.

You can weave a fabric through the railings so he can't get through.

You could put a roll of chicken wire along the railings and tie it on with zip ties to prevent the dog from falling through. They also make this in a heavy plastic webbing sold as snow fencing etc. I get it at True Value Hardware..... comes in several colors... https://www.truevalue.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=plastic+fencing

I guess a lot depends on what the building will allow. If your dog is small and your concern is closing the openings in the railing, wire fencing in black will be the least visible option. If your dog is large and your concern is the dog going over the railing perhaps you could build planter boxes that are backed by a high lattice in a rigid frame. If you cannot install anchors onto the balcony above, you could become friends with the resident of the balcony above and secure some screening to the bottom of their railings. Love that you're looking out for you best bud.

My friend purchased black netting made for covering fruiting plants (to keep birds from eating the fruit) and fitted it to her balcony railing with zip ties. Another possibility would be to use plastic lattice, because it comes in a variety of colors and could be matched to your building's colors.

You could use strong netting like chicken wire or even plexiglass.

Sort of depends on how big the dog is. But big box stores sell a thick wire that can be cut to the desired size.

Hi Florence, hope this helps you. To make your balcony safe for dogs, you must first secure the perimeter by installing mesh, plexiglass, or other barriers to prevent falls and ensure there are no gaps for them to squeeze through. Additionally, provide comfortable, non-slip flooring, ensure there is shade and water, keep climbable furniture away from the railings, and always supervise your dog when they are on the balcony.

Hi Florence; How big is your dog and does he/she jump? Or, can he/she crawl under and between the rails? If the latter, you can put chicken wire up on the outside of the rails and weave a piece of pvc pipe between the wire and rails at the bottom to ensure that the bottom isn't pushed out. If your dog jumps, perhaps you can put down a product called cat matt at the edges of the railing. It will work to keep the dog from getting close to the railing to jump. It won't hurt him/her, but it will make it very uncomfortable on the feet. It looks worse than it really is :) I've used it to keep rats, mice and critters away from digging under my shed. They step on it once and then avoid it like the plague. It can be cut to make it narrower, too. https://www.amazon.com/Xweptuy-Deterrent-78-7x11-8in-Cuttable-Connectable/dp/B0FF27S9TY/ref=sr_1_13?

Make sure all gaps are closed off so he cannot slip thru. If you are on a top floor have a tarp to keep the pup out of the sun and heat.

Fit Chicken Wire to the inside of it.

  • Hi Florence! To make a balcony secure for your dog, install physical barriers along the railings to prevent falls, such as plexiglass, mesh, or netting. Remove any furniture or objects that your dog could use to climb, ensure the flooring is non-slip, and use gates to block the entrance to the balcony. Always supervise your dog on the balcony.
