I remodeled our main bathroom and wanted to do something special with the closet. I was inspired by some antique wooden lockers we saw online.

My inspiration piece.
  1. I started by removing the original doors and trim.
Our plain hollow core bifold doors.

In order to have something to attach the hinges to, I installed new 3/4 inch solid oak casing. I also used a piece of oak veneer plywood to divide the interior space in half.

The lighter board is dividing the space.

I constructed a frame to hold the 2 drawers on the bottom. In keeping with the vintage look I wanted, I made the drawers very simply, with no interior hardware.

I constructed 4 shaker style doors scaled to fit in my opening. I recommend referring to a DIY book for instructions. I installed pieces of the perforated sheet metal in the top panel. My flat panels are free floating to allow for expansion as this is in a bathroom. I added cross pieces to the back of the doors to prevent warping and add strength.

Cross pieces for added strength.

To create the illusion of having 4 separate lockers, I added a 1 inch wide piece of oak to the edge of doors 1 and 3. I also sawed a kerf along this piece.

To finish, I used an antique oil finish- with no color added. It really brought out the natural beauty of the wood. I I installed magnetic catches, brass handles, label holders, and numbers. I used the screws that came with each. To personalize, I printed my family's names on the computer in old fashioned script and put them in the label holders.

And ready for the close up!

Did you adapt the old doors or construct new ones? Does it still open as a bifold set of doors?

Love this idea. My husband and I just looked at your outcome and realized how our plain closet can fit in now, in our industrial look basement remodel. Thanks for the inspiration.
