I have a lot of wooden cigar boxes I use for organizing throughout the house, I keep the same style of box together.
If possible, remove the labels off of the wooden ones and woodburn them. Also if you have "too Many" donate them to a local Girl Scout or Brownie troop Cub Scouts or other youth group.
I love the big box in your picture. You can make a sewing box out of one if you do hand sewing or make one for a gift. Button box if you keep them. Put one in drawer by washer to put odd & ends in or kitchen for same thing. By door to drop keys in or a big one to drop keys & gloves in. Fix front to open & stack a bunch together & put smaller ones inside as drawers without tops. The list is long . I use mine for everything.
Thanks, I'm planning on making sewing boxes and keepsake boxes and prayer boxes. I have a woodburner to put designs on them.
You can cover with pretty wall paper and give away as a gift or store pictures in them or use as a candy box, any for sale lol
I've been sitting on a good stash of cigar boxes for a while and just recently started working with them. As several have suggested I decorated with pretty scrapbook papers, fancy napkins, laces etc and lined with fabric samples I picked up at thrift shop. Great fun to do. They were given as gifts, one of which has been used in the kitchen for storing her teas.
I don't mean to hurt your feelings but get rid of the ones with paper and cardboard. Rodents and bugs love them in Louisiana. I would put giant labels on them and use them for storage of anything. If you can take the wood apart you could cover an accent wall. Put tool parts in them and put clear tape on the outside covering a tool part. Ex all odd ceiling fan sm pieces and chains... I use to give them to my students to stash under their desk for spare supplies. ex colors
Use them for gift boxes. Put tissue paper inside along with a candle and a bar of homemade soap or a couple of bath bombs. You could also get some napkin rings and pretty napkins....I love those🙂 You don't even need to wrap the box...some are very beautiful...just tie a pretty ribbon on it. I gave one to each of my grandkids filled with small flashlights, pocket sized tissues, hand sanitizer, pencils, markers, notebooks, lip gloss, nail polish, hand lotion, paint sets, stickers,...anything small that fits the child. That was the biggest hit of all, simply because of the flashlights! Who knew!? Just use your imagination and everyone will be delighted!
i collect them too! I especially love the one with the dovetailing! And the long one on the floor. I will keep as much the beautiful wood showing an thinking of decorating a bit to match my Jewelry Craft Show display. For added height, and storage.
You could donate them to an art group and have a design contest. My bead society did this and the results were stunning! Good luck. Let us know your decision.
A few years ago my sister got her hands on some wooden cigar boxes. They sat for a while, Christmas was coming and she knew she could do something with the, but what? All the women in our family make our gifts for one another . I opened mine, I loved it from the first peek. She made for us personalized 'what not' boxes. We each received different sizes and shapes. Mine was different variations of green, my favorite color. They were painted inside and out, they each had different wood beads for feet. She found different little metal what not's for the corners, latches/closure's, etc. She took the opportunity to use some of her vintage post cards to decoupage with. She also shopped scrap booking isles, mostly for borders for inside and out, Mom's was lined with velvet because of the special extra gift that sister put in there. She finished them all off with one of the matte finish spray in a can or maybe it's shinny, but anyhow, don't spray the velvet, put that in after it's sprayed and is very dry. I have used mine in the bedroom, bathroom, living room and the entry hall, all for different reasons, including to just show it off
You could cover some with hardback book covers. Secret storage on a shelf.
The nicer ones could just be put around the house for almost any storage use, then paint, cover with fabric or paper, beads, buttons, shells,etc... Whatever flips your skirt or rocks your boat.
I want one for dryer sheets!
If you have granddaughters you can make individually personalized jewelry boxes for them. They become treasures because you made it especially for them.
My first thought was just to use one to hold remotes. Then I thought of a docking station for phones and tablets pretty much anything that needs charging. My children are adults and I would make one for each bedroom, even a guest room just drill the holes in back and paint it then write what it's for. Receipts from atm cards if you don't write it as soon as you get home. Obviously for desk organizations like stamps labels pencils pens extra stickers paperclips glue there is just so much that collects on desk or in a drawer but a mess in there this would be so efficient. You can even leave one open on counter top to hold oil salt and pepper. Or even a plant. Maybe herb like basil that smells so good and most people use or are favorite one as long as they don't replant into box since you can not water you can put a liner in it then rocks or pretty glass beads then water will drip down and evaporate. How about lining it with felt then adding coasters so that they are nice and tidy in the rooms you need them brings interest when closed and is great for guest's. Have fun.
Wow! So many great ideas here! My Dad has saved them through the years. He put all sorts of things in them as mentioned above. I will definitely try using the wooden ones as suggested. Thank you!
Years ago, purses made from cigar boxes were very popular. https://www.pinterest.com/explore/cigar-box-purse/
Excuse me.....not that many years ago. I still have some wood boxes and some started and not finished. And I will finish them in time for that craft to recycle.!ha!
I bought one at a yard sale and used to make a music box vignette as a baby gift.
jewellery box, desk box, lounge box, and you can also pile tyhem up, making sure to fix each one to the others in order make a column, a bit like columns of books made of old books pierced with a metal axis...
With fair coming up some may like to purchase them to use for a project. Just advertise them for sale. Churches may like them to do projects for bible school of whatever.
Don't throw them away!!! You can use these for a filing system, or have them for a child, to teach them, how to put the toys away, each night. If you know of someone, who has kids, give them to her, and she will truly be grateful. Best wishes.
A friend of mine had a pile of antique cigar boxes and her husband built a frame and she use the boxes as drawers to hold her sewing supplies.
Would you sell me one? I am looking for an enexpensive one to store garden seeds in
