I cannot decide what to do with the these wooden cigar boxes- ideas?

by Casey Gragg
I have this local store that sells cigar boxes and I cannot help but buy all the wooden ones knowing there is 1000's of ideas and then the almight brain block hits and I'm at a loss ~lol~ I can blame it on age but it more like a mass confusion of way to many ideas at once. I need your help on a first project I want to do for Hometalk fellow crafters kind of a collective project. So any and all suggestions will be helpful. Oh and I do pintsrest and have a board full of ideas but I want your suggestions something new or different then a jewelry box. Thanks
Most of these have a paper glued to the wood, as much as I love the look of the cigar labels some are not appealing.
This one is awesome. The box is handsomely made I really want to reserve this for a special project! Again any and all ideas welcome

For a unique set of book ends fill a pair with sand and then use Gorilla glue or the like to seal the lid to the base and Voila! Bookends. You could also line them with a strong waterproof plastic and use them to plant small indoor gardens. Great for centerpieces and for growing fresh herbs.

Find a few similar in depth (front to back) and use them for man cave or game room shelving, simply find a 1"x2" wood strip the length of the shelf you want to make, glue and screw the boxes to the strip, then mount them to a wall, you flush the tops so the shelf has a flat top, the lids can still open if you keep the wood strip below the hinge level.

I decoupage small pieces of brown paper sack on to a cardboard cigar box. This covers the embossing and emblems. Then I use stain or diluted brown craft paint to give it a leather look. The wood ones I have I use as is for storage of stationary items or little treasure boxes for keepsakes.

Put felt inside, if you want to keep the labels intact decopaug or clear coat it. If not remove them an apply a new picture, clear coat and you have a jewerly box for men or women or even a gift box.

@Laura Trammell , I spent most of my day searching printables photos for decoupage and I came across some vintages photos of ladies sewing and other with little girls learning to sew they are so beautiful. I'm going to make a few sewing boxes. Thanks for your idea

The beautiful wooden ones could be made into jewelry boxes. The other ones could be made into purses by adding a handle & a closure. Although you do not want to cover them, as a Girl Scout, we took the boxes covered them & made mini first-aid kits or sewing kits. Just a few ideas.

the flatter ones stood on end and with the spine made to look like books would be cool "secret storage", especially mixed in with real books.

This idea is for the smaller, cubical boxes. Why not put a strong magnet on the back side (drill a hole, but not all the way through, just enough space for the magnet). Get one of those magnetic knife racks (slim & long ones), attach horizontally on wall behind countertop. Now you can use the boxes for spice jars or anything that comes in handy while cooking.

I get my cigar boxes from our local cigar shop for free. I called the owner and asked if he would let me have his empty boxes and he said yes! Once a week I stop by and pick them up. Here's a pic of my first cigar box purse. I just have to attach the handle and clasp.

This may have already been suggested. Cover the box with a cloth,Material, (your choice). Place small pieces of wood inside and make different sized boxes inside. Use small strips of thin wood to do this. Line the bottom with felt and you have a jewelry box, miscellaneous parts chest. Place cut up toilet Paper rolls and place in different places to change the look. Cover the rolls with a different color than the rest of the compartments. you can decorate them so they will fit in with your kitchen, bathroom or bedrooms. If there happens to be a Cigar Smell in the boxes, just add some dried fruit like an apple and the smell will be gone. Good luck and hope this may be of some good to you.

  • Jack Jack on Mar 30, 2016
I took a large piece of plywood, stained it, arranged the boxes on it and screwed the boxes to it. Because of the irregular shapes of the boxes sometimes it left cubbyholes between the boxes. I left the boxes in their original condition. I bought metal label holders that have an old fashion look to place labels in to tell me what was in the boxes. I hung this over my desk. I called it a Man's Smoking Storage Unit even though it was not used for smoking supplies.
    • Casey Gragg Casey Gragg on Mar 30, 2016
@Jack, Thanks, I'm really liking the cubbie for the wall. And you have took it up a notch, I never thought of doing it on a piece of wood, that way it can be moved. Love it

I padded the top of an old hinged wood cigar box. Then I completely covered the inside and out with youthful fabric by "gift-wrapping" the pieces and mitering the edges so the fabric was really flat and tight. I used a little spray glue to hold the fabric in place as I "wrapped". I glued felt inside the top and bottom to cover the fabric edges and hold them more securely. Lastly, I glued a cute puffy bear to the outside of the top. I gave it to my 5-year old to store his treasures. This was 30 years ago! It is still a lovely piece and I treasured it especially since that young son passed away 23 years ago. This past Christmas, I presented it to his older brother who will now cherish it.

I've painted some and stored them in my kitchen to hold individually wrapped bags of tea (I even have one for the office). The other thing I could suggest is to turn them into mini trunks. Wrap them in faux leather and add some metal embellishments. Finally, I'd suggest some awesome shadow box wall art. Paint them, add some cool stuff inside, and hang them on the wall. Some can be opened, others closed when you want to highlight different ones. I'd say that you could even make them into clock shadowboxes, if you're into clocks. Here's a link of an example: http://www.clumsycraftyhappy.com/copycraft-shadow-box-clock/ If you ever want to get rid of them... :) Happy crafting!

  • Carol Carol on Mar 30, 2016
Ha! Like you, I adore boxes too. I am always picking them up at thrift stores, or sometimes if I just ask at any Smoke Shop, they will give(!) me a few cigar boxes. So, now I have this large collection with no actual purpose in mind. (Sigh. This could be said for Many items I have!) I will be reading the comments here for ideas. I like Kathy's idea about 'decorator' books.

Yes! I love re-purposing... using something in a different way. I collected driftwood and then used it as 'curtain rods' over kitchen windows, then draped vintage lace tablecloths over and around the driftwood sticks as my curtains for a 'beach house' look.

Being a "boxy" person myself, I've made a lot of things out of them. One previous commenter mentioned purses, handbags. They were a big fad here a few years ago and were usually made with the decorative papers left on. They also make great little jewelry boxes, lined with velvet and separated into sections, with a little fancy knob or handle on the lid. I really love the larger dovetailed one. I hope you post something on that when you finish it. Thanks.
    • Casey Gragg Casey Gragg on Mar 30, 2016

I make purses out of mine. I have had mine at least 15 years...take it to weddings, special dinners out, n vacations. It is always a conversation piece ! I have made many as gifts for friends too! In Sept 2014, my youngest daughter got married...she asked me to make them for her & all 7 bridesmaids. I also made one for my other 2 daughters, the ring bearer ( my 4 yr old granddaughter & her future mother in law. Each one was different & unique & I carried mine. If you feel charitable, make sewing boxes for 4th grade girls. When, Imwas that age in 4-H, we made these. Cut pieces to cover the lid. Make a little pillow case. Paint the rest of the box, slip pillow case on lid. Include a spool of white thread and some needles pinned on the inside of box. It would be a good way to get little girls started.

another thought, since you have so many, take them apart and cover a large trunk or book shelf with the slats, like panelling. or a backsplash. door. etc.

My gramma used to make doll beds with the boxes. Cut the lid off and then use 4 old fashioned wooden clothespins as corner posts, and old wooden thread spools as the legs. Then she would sew bedding for it. You could also drill a hole into each bottom corner and push a dowel through and then use the lid as a canopy.

I love the big box in your picture. You can make a sewing box out of one if you do hand sewing or make one for a gift. Button box if you keep them. Put one in drawer by washer to put odd & ends in or kitchen for same thing. By door to drop keys in or a big one to drop keys & gloves in. Fix front to open & stack a bunch together & put smaller ones inside as drawers without tops. The list is long . I use mine for everything.

I've been sitting on a good stash of cigar boxes for a while and just recently started working with them. As several have suggested I decorated with pretty scrapbook papers, fancy napkins, laces etc and lined with fabric samples I picked up at thrift shop. Great fun to do. They were given as gifts, one of which has been used in the kitchen for storing her teas.

You can also use these boxes for recipes too. Use index cards as separaters. Also you can use any kind of fabric that is washable, or contact paper to cover it. You can also match your index cards to the fabric you use on the outside so they are easier to find.

we used to use those cigar boxes in school for our projects like making terrariums, and stage small battle fields, we also used them as a back board for making pictures, like opening them up, painting them, finding sea oats, or sea grass, different shapes of shells. We would spray the sea oats gold and the sea grass silver. Then mount them down in one corner, with elmers glue on the board that has been painted a beautiful blue-green sea blue. Let the sea oats arch over the top. And then clean your shells with soap and water with 1-cap of Bleach in a gallon of water w/dish soap in it. Use an old toothbrush to get the dirty grime off the shell.

When you are finished lightly(very lightly) spray some irredesient glitter. Let this dry completely!! Then you can mount a hanging fastener the back of the board and hang on selected wall.

I don't mean to hurt your feelings but get rid of the ones with paper and cardboard. Rodents and bugs love them in Louisiana. I would put giant labels on them and use them for storage of anything. If you can take the wood apart you could cover an accent wall. Put tool parts in them and put clear tape on the outside covering a tool part. Ex all odd ceiling fan sm pieces and chains... I use to give them to my students to stash under their desk for spare supplies. ex colors

Use them for gift boxes. Put tissue paper inside along with a candle and a bar of homemade soap or a couple of bath bombs. You could also get some napkin rings and pretty napkins....I love those🙂 You don't even need to wrap the box...some are very beautiful...just tie a pretty ribbon on it. I gave one to each of my grandkids filled with small flashlights, pocket sized tissues, hand sanitizer, pencils, markers, notebooks, lip gloss, nail polish, hand lotion, paint sets, stickers,...anything small that fits the child. That was the biggest hit of all, simply because of the flashlights! Who knew!? Just use your imagination and everyone will be delighted!

A few years ago my sister got her hands on some wooden cigar boxes. They sat for a while, Christmas was coming and she knew she could do something with the, but what? All the women in our family make our gifts for one another . I opened mine, I loved it from the first peek. She made for us personalized 'what not' boxes. We each received different sizes and shapes. Mine was different variations of green, my favorite color. They were painted inside and out, they each had different wood beads for feet. She found different little metal what not's for the corners, latches/closure's, etc. She took the opportunity to use some of her vintage post cards to decoupage with. She also shopped scrap booking isles, mostly for borders for inside and out, Mom's was lined with velvet because of the special extra gift that sister put in there. She finished them all off with one of the matte finish spray in a can or maybe it's shinny, but anyhow, don't spray the velvet, put that in after it's sprayed and is very dry. I have used mine in the bedroom, bathroom, living room and the entry hall, all for different reasons, including to just show it off

You could cover some with hardback book covers. Secret storage on a shelf.

The nicer ones could just be put around the house for almost any storage use, then paint, cover with fabric or paper, beads, buttons, shells,etc... Whatever flips your skirt or rocks your boat.

I want one for dryer sheets!

My first thought was just to use one to hold remotes. Then I thought of a docking station for phones and tablets pretty much anything that needs charging. My children are adults and I would make one for each bedroom, even a guest room just drill the holes in back and paint it then write what it's for. Receipts from atm cards if you don't write it as soon as you get home. Obviously for desk organizations like stamps labels pencils pens extra stickers paperclips glue there is just so much that collects on desk or in a drawer but a mess in there this would be so efficient. You can even leave one open on counter top to hold oil salt and pepper. Or even a plant. Maybe herb like basil that smells so good and most people use or are favorite one as long as they don't replant into box since you can not water you can put a liner in it then rocks or pretty glass beads then water will drip down and evaporate. How about lining it with felt then adding coasters so that they are nice and tidy in the rooms you need them brings interest when closed and is great for guest's. Have fun.

Don't throw them away!!! You can use these for a filing system, or have them for a child, to teach them, how to put the toys away, each night. If you know of someone, who has kids, give them to her, and she will truly be grateful. Best wishes.
