Beat the Heat: How I Installed a Mini-Split Heat Pump in My Pool House

Down here in northern Mississippi, in the American South, we have absolutely brutal summers, which is why I built a pool. But if I was going to build a pool, I also wanted a pool house.
The pool house is still under construction, but before I can finish the job (or enjoy the space once it's done) I need a way to keep it cool. And having heat in the winter wouldn't hurt either.
Today, I'm fixing that with the Tosot 12,000 BTU heat pump mini-split air conditioner and heater.
1. Choosing the Right Spot for the Indoor Unit
The first step is finding the right location for the indoor unit.
It needs to be mounted high on the wall, out of direct sunlight, and with enough clearance on all sides for proper airflow.
Next, I drill a hole through the wall for the line set, which includes all the tubing that connects the indoor and outdoor units.
It's important to drill the hole with a slight downward slope toward the outside so any condensation drains away from the building instead of back inside.
2. Preparing the Indoor Unit
With the hole drilled, I connect the command wire to the indoor unit, simply matching the heat-shrink colors on the command wire to the colors inside the unit.
I also need to swap the drain hose to the opposite side and move the drain plug so everything lines up properly for my installation.
Once that's done, I feed the line set through the wall, connect it to the indoor unit, and hang the unit securely on its mounting bracket.
3. Why I Chose This Mini-Split
This unit has all the certifications you'd expect, but one feature I especially like is that it's an inverter system.
Instead of simply turning completely on or completely off, it ramps its speed up and down depending on how much cooling or heating is needed.
That means it runs more consistently at lower speeds, which is easier on the equipment, helps maintain a more stable temperature, and improves efficiency over time.
It's also rated at 19 SEER2 for cooling and 8.5 HSPF2 for heating. Since it's a heat pump, it'll cool in outdoor temperatures up to 113°F and continue heating all the way down to -13°F.
In my climate, I never have to worry about this system keeping the pool house comfortable year-round.

4. Installing the Outdoor Unit
Outside, the condenser sits on a level pad, though you can also mount it on an optional wall bracket.
After positioning the unit, I connect the line sets and the command wire.
For the electrical, I run the wiring through outdoor-rated watertight conduit.
Normally, it's not acceptable to run insulated flexible cable like SOOW through conduit for long distances because heat can build up.
In my case, though, it's only a short six-foot whip to equipment that vibrates, and my local code allows it.
As always, check your local electrical code, or your inspector will be happy to let you know if you got it wrong.
5. Wiring the Disconnect Box
One thing you don't want to skip is the disconnect box.
It's a weatherproof switch mounted right next to the outdoor unit that allows you to shut off power to the system with a single flip.
It's an important safety feature, and in most places it's required by code.
My unit runs on 230 volts, so I have two hot wires coming in. I connect those to L1 and L2, starting with the bottom terminals since they're easier to reach before the upper wires are in place.
Then I connect the control wire that powers and communicates with the indoor unit, matching the wire colors exactly as I did inside: blue to blue, black to black, and brown to brown.
6. Vacuuming the Line Set Is Critical
When connecting the refrigerant lines, it's critical to properly torque the flare nuts.
If they aren't tightened correctly, refrigerant can leak out and you'll probably end up calling an HVAC technician to fix it.
Before powering the system on, the line set also needs to be evacuated with a vacuum pump to remove any moisture or air. Skipping this step risks damaging the entire system.
Once the lines hold vacuum, it's safe to open the service valves and allow the refrigerant to flow through the indoor unit and the line set.
Even though my vacuum held perfectly, I still spray soapy water on every connection after pressurizing the system to check for leaks.
No bubbles means no leaks. And that's exactly what I was hoping to see.
7. First Startup
Now it's finally time to power everything up.
The unit had only been running for about 20 to 30 minutes, but the difference was already obvious.
It was 95°F outside with a 98-degree heat index, yet the air coming out of the unit measured around 50°F.
That's exactly what I was hoping for.
The Finished Result
I'm really impressed with the features on this system. It has cooling, heating, dehumidifier, and automatic modes, plus motorized louvers that move both up and down and side to side, so it distributes air throughout the entire space.
Best of all, it's incredibly quiet.
It's the same pool house, but it feels like a completely different space now. It's comfortable to work in, which means it'll get finished a whole lot sooner.
And once it's done, it'll be a place we actually spend time in instead of just walking through on the way to the pool.
