Hi, I'm Amber Oliver! I hope if you enjoy this project you'll also stop by my blog!Spring is the best time of the year! It's when everything is new and blooming and the COLORS! Color is everywhere! It's not like the beautiful muted colors of fall - I'm talking bright, bold blooms! Inspired by those fun colors - I created these colorful step stones!

Hometalk Recommends!

Create a daisy walkway with these best selling yellow and white spray paint that Amazon reviewers swear by!

Start with a bag of river stones. Pick out the broken ones and try to get a large amount that are the same size. The smaller pieces are perfect for the centers of the "flowers" and the long ones are perfect for the petals.

Set out groups for each color. I used 7-8 for each color flower with one extra for the center of the "flower".
Spray paint your groups of rocks. Dig through your spray paint stash and get all the bright pretty colors! Or maybe you'd prefer a daisy walkway - use white and yellow! Get creative and use the colors of your choice.
Once your rocks dry it's time to create the stones. I used dollar store pie tins. Grease with petroleum jelly so they remove easily.
Mix up your concrete according to the directions.
Fill up your pie tin.
level out the concrete in the pie tin.
Add in your stones! Press them into the shape of a flower and add a center stone for the perfect shape.
These are an adorable, decorative addition to your garden!

    Any good fall projects?

  • Rob Rob on Jan 29, 2023

Hi, nice project but I'm wondering if there is a reason you used the black river rock, which most expensive river rock?

A side comment to those considering this is that regular stones can be used, even from the beach etc. Also, as I am thinking about this, I think the concrete needs to be roughed to reduce possible slipping on them.

I love this idea, but another thing I was thinking as I read your post, painted rock edges of the garden would be very colorful and be a colorful affect for the transition of short season long season flowers. We have 4x4 plots bordered by brick edging. This is next to or drive and is the most prominent so we keep the color going. There are 5 plots and an area that looks like a sitting area but it’s set up like a picket fence with layers. We did this so that we can get out of our car and not step into a garden. It’s very inviting. So my thought is to border these gardens and th other in front of our walk way to the front door with the colorful rocks. Maybe even put glow in the dark paint on them to light the way.
