Velcro to the Rescue! No More Outdoor Cushions Blowing Away!
We have a nice patio...but when the wind blows from the north it's like a wind tunnel out there! And here in ND we have a lot of northerly winds. The back cushions on the chairs were always blowing off. I thought I'd hand stitch on some outdoor cushion fasteners or ties to keep them in place.....but I really didn't want to work that hard. ;-) So Velcro to the rescue! Read on to find out how I made Velcro cushion fasteners.....
The cushions look nice...but the backs were often being blown off by the wind. (Side note: I actually spray painted the fabric with Rustoleum --two different colors. I made three throw pillows from Sunbrella fabric. This one is actually stuffed with plastic grocery bags!)
Using industrial strength Velcro with self-adhesive backing, I cut a piece of both the "loop side" and the "hook side" to fit. As you can see, I made it so it won't be visible when the cushion is placed up against the frame. I used the" hook side" of the Velcro to attach to the top back of the chair frame.
This is the back of the cushion. Here's how to get the two sides of the Velcro for outdoor cushions to line up perfectly.
- Remove the self-adhesive back from one side of the Velcro. (eg. the hook side) Attach it to the frame.
- Remove the self-adhesive back from the other side (eg. the loop side) and attach it to the part that's already positioned on the frame. NOT to the cushion itself.
- Now merely press the cushion up against the frame snuggly. Voila, now you've got your Velcro cushion ties! The two parts are now adhered together, perfectly aligned.
I used industrial strength Velcro because I had some on hand. But I do think it'll come in handy with our strong winds. ;-)

That’s such a clever solution! I’ve had the same problem with my outdoor cushions blowing away every time the wind picks up. I was considering adding ties or fasteners, but like you, I wasn’t too keen on the extra work. Using Velcro is such a smart and easy fix—I’ll definitely have to try that! I’ve been looking at getting some new cushions from Birch Lane, and this will be a perfect way to keep them secure.

I have to admit, while this worked in our small backyard area at a house where we no longer live, I'm not sure it would be ideal for a more open area setting.

Can you wash the cushions with the Velcro on it?
We have a home in Isla Mujeres, Mexico (an island off the coast of Cancun) and it is directly on the ocean (windward side) and have a rooftop concrete sectional couch and I can't seem to find a way to keep my cushions & throw pillows on it without them blowing away.. Will the velcro stick to concrete as well? Thank you .. I appreciate any feedback!
