Decorating Plastic Storage Bins | How to Revamp Containers
Are you on a quest to add a touch of style and organization to your living space?
With a little creativity and some simple materials, you can transform mundane containers into stylish decor pieces.
In this step-by-step guide, we'll show you how to give your plastic storage bins a makeover that will make them not only functional but also decorative.
This post was transcribed by a member of the Hometalk editorial team from the original HometalkTV episode.
Tools and Materials:
- Plastic storage bin
- Drill
- Gray and white patterned fabric
- Scissors
- Spray adhesive
- Jute or similar material for handles
- Craft feet (optional)
- Marker
1. Preparing for the Transformation
To begin decorating your plastic storage bin, grab a plastic bin from Walmart as your canvas.
Start by drilling a few holes into the side of the bin. These holes will serve as handles in the future, so be sure to space them evenly for a balanced look.
Next, flip the plastic bin over and drill four holes, one in each corner. These corner holes will be where we add feet for your decorated bin.
2. Selecting Fabric and Cutting
Now, it's time to add some style to your plastic bin.
I chose a gray and white patterned fabric, but choose anything that matches your decor preferences. Cut the fabric down to size so that it reaches the right height of the bin.
3. Applying Fabric with Spray Adhesive
Using a spray adhesive, generously apply it to the plastic surface of the bin.
Carefully press the cut fabric onto the adhesive, ensuring it adheres smoothly and without wrinkles.
4. Creating Neat Seams
To achieve a polished look, cut up the sides of the fabric where it overlaps at the corners.
Then, fold these two pieces over each other, creating a neat seam.
5. Adding Handles
Now, let's tackle the handles. Locate the holes you drilled earlier, and using a pair of scissors, poke through the fabric at those points.
Thread the jute or your chosen handle material through these holes and tie a knot on the inside to secure it firmly.
6. Elevating Your Bin (Optional)
For an extra touch of elegance, add craft feet to the bottom of your bin. This not only raises it off the ground but also enhances its overall appearance.

I would use contact paper that is textured and cleanable with damp cloth. Wood knobs are available at craft stores and Home Depot or any stores like these. The idea, I believe is to make the container more presentable for the living area.. not a storage area.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
And how do you clean this when the fabric gets dirty?
Looks just like a plastic bin covered with fabric. What’s the point?
I wonder if you could find some wheels to add to the bottom? Another poster suggested contact paper instead of fabric. Easy to clean contact paper. Good idea.
