Repurposing an Outdated Entertainment Unit.

We are firm believers in recycling, repurposing and reusing. We also love mid century modern furniture, particularly teak. The days of entertainment units, which were so popular in the last couple of decades, has ended, mostly because TVs are so much bigger and don't fit.
We have already several pieces of Danish mid century teak furniture, including a table, chairs, wall unit and sideboard, all pieces have been picked up at second hand stores, garage sales or thrift shops. We have been looking for a coffee table to match the rest of our furniture but had no success.
We live in a small cottage so size of coffee table was restricted to what would fit in our space. We found this solid teak entertainment unit at a garage sale and husband thought he could certainly get enough material from it to make a coffee table, so we offered them $25 and hauled it home. It was really heavy to move!!!!

We started by making a plan of the size and style of the table we wanted. Then it was time to take the old unit apart and salvage as much as we could.

Next step husband started to cut the pieces for the coffee table, he managed to save the part with the sliding doors, all he needed was a couple of pieces for the side and we had a self standing TV stand with tamboured doors, nice.

Next step was putting together the coffee table. It's perfect, fits the room great and is in the mid century modern style we like. The pieces were cut on a table saw and glued and nailed together with finishing nails . All the pieces were oiled with teak oil and buffed with a dry cloth.

We still had lots of wood left, so husband decided to make a hence for storing our shoes for the entrance way. Extra bonus we weren't counting on.

We are so pleased with our $25 purchase and all the great pieces of furniture we now have, in our favourite style. We managed to keep this piece out of the landfill, a small step but every little helps in reducing our carbon footprint and saving our beautiful planet for our grandchildren.

Wow, really impressive! I like that you have a hard wood place to put your foot when you tie your shoes, keeping them off the cushion. Was that intentional, or were you limited by the size cushion you had?
