Simple but Dramatic DIY Fireplace Update

We used molding to extend our standard fireplace to the ceiling. Before, it was simple and standard. We just used a few pieces of molding and wood as well as white trim paint to give it a dramatic look.
Before & After
We painted everywhere except over the fireplace.
We used a nail gun to add molding to form our fireplace shape.
We added thick boards at the top to mimic the existing mantle.
Here's how it all looked!
We caulked all of the seams.
We painted the entire area with our white trim paint and also refreshed the paint on the existing mantle.
Here is the final product!

Looks great! I know this is an older post, but it looks like you took down existing crown molding on that wall? Did you leave it down? Is there a way to do it and incorporate existing crown molding around the bump out? Thanks!
