Tools and materials

Command hooks

1. Attach command hooks

The first thing you need to do for this project is to attach a lot of command hooks.

Command cord bundler

In addition to the command hooks, I also used these command cord bundlers this year. You will need more command hooks across the top or the horizontal area than down the vertical side.

2. Attach the garlands

My garlands have a loop on the end.

Attaching the vertical garland to the wall

I began hanging one vertically and used the cord bundlers to keep it attached close to the wall.

Attaching the horizontal garland

Next, I used a different hook and used a number of command hooks and cord bundlers to attach the second garland across the top horizontally. You need to make sure that you use the stem or trunk of the garland to hang from the hooks, not just the greenery, or your garland will certainly come down.

At the end of my first garland, I had another one of those loops. I used that to attach to one of the hooks.

Hanging garlands

This is how my opening between the two rooms looks with just two garlands, one hanging vertically and one hanging horizontally.

Making a big red bow with red velvet ribbon

3. Make a bow

The garlands are up and it's time to tie a big, beautiful red velvet bow. Loop the ribbon, then secure it with a red pipe cleaner. If you need to learn how to tie the bow, you can follow my video tutorial here!

Attaching the bow to the garland

4. Attach the bow

I attached my bow with a pipe cleaner to the corner where all of the garlands meet.

Tucking the ribbon streamers into the garland

The streamers can then be tucked right into the garlands, both horizontally and vertically.

Attaching the giant jingle bells

5. Attach jingle bells

I picked up these oversized red jingle bells at Michael's and used a pipe cleaner to attach them securely, either to a garland or to one of my command hooks.

Giant jingle bells graduated from higher down to lower

I made sure that I hung the jingle bells high enough that no one would hit their heads on them, and I graduated them from higher down to lower as they got close to the wall.
