Painted Lawn Stars

I'm always up for new, unique ideas to add to my list of event planning decor and someone I know shared a photo with me of these amazing red, white and blue sprayed stars on a lawn. I had to try it and they came out really cute. I'm totally going to keep this project in mind the next time I have an outdoor party--you can do any color that's available in water-based spray paint and what's even better is that it won't kill your grass!

Our lawn guy came just in time for me to try this project out!

Supplies:

-cardboard box (or you can use a piece of wood and a jigsaw if you want to get fancy)

-printed star

-box cutter (or X-Acto knife)

-water-based spray paint (the only stuff I could find that was sold by the can and not a multi-pack was by Krylon on Amazon)

-fine point Sharpie (not pictured)

*For this project I only had to purchase the spray paint.

STEP 1: Make a Star Pattern on Paper

Cut out your printed star--I just laid mine down on a piece of my cardboard box and cut it out with my box cutter.

STEP 2: Cut a Square of Cardboard

Cut a big square section out of your cardboard box.

STEP 3: Trace Your Pattern on the Cardboard

Lay your star stencil down and trace it with a pen or Sharpie.

STEP 4: Cut out the Cardboard Star

Cut your star out with a box cutter, using the pen marks you drew as a guide.

Here's my star stencil!

STEP 5: Spray Paint Stars

Next, spray inside your star stencil.

Aren't they neat?! Hindsight I wish I would have made my stencil a few inches larger and also gave myself extra "oops!" room because when the wind blew the spray, it went a little past the edge of my cardboard, but overall I was happy with how this quick, unique decor idea came out.

I can not draw anything... how did you get a perfect star? I would like a 'huge' star, like yours because I want to paint a flag on my wood fence. Fence is 6 ft. tall & 75 ft. long, so might do a flag as big as possible, then a huge star and then another flag. I can't find any stencils with large stars.

    Glow in the dark paint?

How long did it take the paint to dry?

I'm going to try this for our graduation party, thanks for the idea!

This could take decorating for a celebration to another level. You could paint a hopscotch or tic-tac-toe, or a bullseye for a kids outdoor party. There’s a lot of ideas that could branch out from this idea. Perfect that you can just wash it away when done. Kids will love this!

Very cute but maybe mow the lawn pretty short in that area first?
