How to Create Fun Patriotic Lights
Today, I have an exciting project to share with you that will add a dash of patriotic flair to your upcoming 4th of July festivities.
Prepare to be amazed as we transform an ordinary pool noodle into a stunning piece of outdoor decor that will have your neighbors talking.
This red, white, and blue craft is perfect for those who want to showcase their patriotic spirit while adding a touch of creativity to their outdoor spaces. So, grab a pool noodle and let's embark on this DIY adventure together!
This post was transcribed by a member of the Hometalk editorial team from the original HometalkTV episode.
1. Gather Materials

- Red or dark pink pool noodle
- White athletic tape
- Blue duct tape
- Star stickers
- Firecracker-looking lights (available on Amazon)
- Dollar Store broom handle

2. Mark the Lines with White Athletic Tape
Take the red or dark pink pool noodle and use the white athletic tape to create lines from the bottom of the noodle up to several inches from the top. Try to make the lines as straight as possible, but don't worry if they're not perfect. You can always adjust them later.
3. Cut the Tape and Create Stripes
Using scissors, cut off the top of the white athletic tape.
Repeat this step to make several lines with the athletic tape around the pool noodle, leaving a red strip in between each white one. This will give your decoration a patriotic striped look.
4. Wrap the Top with Blue Duct Tape
Now, take the blue duct tape and wrap it all around the top of the pool noodle, covering up the top of the white stripes. This will create the blue section of your patriotic lights.
5. Add Star Stickers
To add an extra touch of patriotism, place star stickers around the blue section of the pool noodle. You can create a pattern or randomly distribute the stars. Let your creativity shine!
6. Insert the Lights
Now it's time to give your patriotic lights a dazzling effect.
Take firework lights and place them in the hole at the top of the pool noodle. If the lights don't fit, you can take the battery pack to the back of the noodle.
Use the cover from the battery compartments as a guide to create the correct size hole to slip them into.
Adjust the hole size by tracing around the battery pack with a pen.
Then, use a utility knife to cut it out. Be careful while cutting it out to ensure a proper fit for the lights.
7. Prepare the Broom Handle
To provide stability for your patriotic lights once they are set up outside, dismantle a Dollar Store broom and
Keep the handle and set aside the brush for future projects.
8. Set Up the Lights
Using a rubber mallet, pound the broom handle into the ground to create a sturdy base for your lights.
Then, slide the pool noodle onto the broom handle.
Finally, insert the battery pack and lights into the hole you cut at the top of the pool noodle.
Here is what the lights looked like when I was done setting them up.
Here is the final masterpiece; a gorgeous 4th of July decoration using a humble pool noodle. These look gorgeous during the day and even better at night!
Now, it's your turn to showcase your creativity! I invite you to share your red, white, and blue crafted lamps with us in the comments. Whether you've added your own unique twists, experimented with different materials, or discovered creative uses for these patriotic lights, I want to see it all.

These are so great! I made some and get many compliments from stoppers-by! Great and inexpensive little project to help ring in The 4th of July! Thanks for sharing! 🎆 🇺🇸
I think these could also work for Christmas, instead styling them into Candy Cane sticks?
Even bending the tops into a cane shape should work. Thoughts??
will spray paint flake off the pool noodle?
