Stains under the glass of a smooth top stove

Mary Insana
by Mary Insana
My smooth glass top electric stove is VERY stained. The problem is, the stains look like they may be under the glass. I have used every imaginable product and combinations of products and the stains haven't budged. Vinegar, baking soda, Bar Keepers Friend, Comet cleanser, oven cleaner, glass top stove cleaners, fine steel wool, synthetic scrubbed etc. you get the idea. When I run my hand over the stained area it's very smooth just like the rest of the top.
Can the stains be under the glass? Has anyone every removed the glass top to clean under it?

How old is the stove? Do you have your owners manuel? I do not think you should attempt anything until you either read the manuel or call the manufactor. Unfortunately they all look beautiful until we have to clean them.

My first glass top range came with a single edge razor blade which would clean up gunk that nothing else would remove, but if I were you, I would consult a manual or call the manufacturer.

Hi Mary, did you ever figure out what was wrong with that stove? I have the same problem. Called Whirlpool and she said those speckles can NOT be rubbed off. I took a strong magnifying glass to it and yes, they are still there. But they appear to be under a top thin layer of glass. Mine almost looks like the top layer is a little separated from the speckled layer, possibly done by poking a thin hole in the top layer and letting the smoke or burn get through to it? Not sure but I know for 100% sure my white speckles are still there I saw them magnified but dark and discolored. They used two inks on same layer, black and white, to create that affect. So if you were scraping off white you'd also be scraping off the black, not the case. As far as I can tell there is no way to fix this. Did you ever fix yours?

Try to scrape it off with a paint scraper while it is dry and not wet
    • Mary Insana Mary Insana on Mar 17, 2016
Tried a razor blad, wet, dry, with a vinegar baking soda paste, dawn dish detergent. I even though of standing on my head while I cleaned it LOL. Nothing is budging it.

Mary is saying the glass top "feels smooth", therefore, I doubt anything (such as razor, knife, cleanser) is going to do the job. I would call the manufacturer and see what advice that may give as well as go to the store where you purchased the appliance. I've never had that problem so can't help. I've recently moved and my stovetop has marks (below the surface) that look as though something has been dropped on it. I've also got strange looking marks that look like drops of liquid are ON the glasstop but they're not - they appear to be "inside" the glass or, perhaps, underneath. So, my problem is similar to yours, Mary .... but just different loo

PS: i forgot to ask you, Mary ... just for curiosity, what brand of stove do you have? Mine's a Whirlpool and I would say 8 years old - the age of the condo building I'm in.
  • Elaine Elaine on Mar 17, 2016
PS: Sorry, Mary!! My finger slipped and my answer went back to you before I was done. I was about to say that my problem is similar to yours but just different in appearance. I'm putting up with mine for the time being as I'm gradually replacing the (8 year-old) appliances to match the new dishwasher. Good luck.

Ha! I missed this post! If you're a good cook, no one will be looking at your stove, I'm sure! :)
  • Susan Susan on Mar 17, 2016
Looks like you have worn off the top surface of the stovetop. The spotted effect is applied after the stovetop is manufactured - I've worn mine off in a couple of places also. Nothing to be done, unfortunately.

Elaine gave me an idea...perhaps it is stress fractures IN the glass. Someone may have dropped something on it. Just a thought....

@Sally Charles-Evans: My marks are on one of the front burners. A very elderly lady lived here before me and I'm wondering if she dropped a very heavy pot or perhaps something like a metal meat tenderizer (I have a real heavy one!) as two of the small marks look like a heavy strike has hit glass hard - then the other marks are like spills of a "liquid" but are IN the glass not on top. All the other burners are fine.

To be on the safe side, call the manufacturer. We have a glass top stove and have read warnings online about them cracking or the glass exploding for various reasons. One cause of the discoloration could be that one of the eyes is overheating under the glass. Better safe than sorry.
    • Mary Insana Mary Insana on Mar 17, 2016
Liz, that's what I was thinking, maybe I've used the high settings on my burners too much and it discolored the glass underneath the top surface.

Have you tried the new Mr. Clean Sponge? The secret is to get it up quickly and not let it burn if you can!
    • Mary Insana Mary Insana on Mar 17, 2016
Tried that and didn't budge the discoloration which makes me thing the stain is under the glass. The stains are just a smooth as the rest of the glass top.

Tried all the different methods listed in the original post and also tried magic eraser, mr clean sponges, scrubby sponges etc and nothing made a difference. The spotted areas ar smooth just like the rest of the glass top.

I had something similair. Used a new straight edged razor blade carefully (on the slant) and it turned out to be a burned area. It may be an indication that the surface needs to be replaced as well. Wish I had gas!
    • Mary Insana Mary Insana on Mar 17, 2016
Tried the razor blade on the areas and it doesn't make a difference. The spots are very smooth like the rest of the glass, math at why I think the discoloration is under the glass
  • Nancy Evans Nancy Evans on Mar 17, 2016
I've seen a method for cleaning between the glass on an oven door on Pinterest. Big job but the post said it work. You might "google" it too.

We have a cracked top. My son said to order a replacement top and that they are easy (plug in) to install....haven't tried it yet. good luck!
  • Janet Pizaro Janet Pizaro on Mar 17, 2016
The discoloration is under the glass so I with said what is a razor blade going to do?This is a top of a stove and not the oven door.As I first mentioned the manufacturer needs to be addressed.
    • Frances Frances on May 29, 2019

I know exactly what you mean. I have same issues. While under warranty Sears replaced the glass top. I bought another extended warranty. Happened again . They replaced it again. I didn't keep up with buying further warranties. Of course it did happen again. I saved the 2 other glass tops. The spots on those are not as bad. I might switch them out but dont know how much money for labor it would be. I think it's caused cooking on high, which my husband does

  • Debbie Debbie on Mar 17, 2016
You can't fix it. It has to be replaced. I have a few of the same spots and they are not on the surface.

Couldn't help but check out if you had a different answer. When these stoves are made they have a finish on the top that over time gets worn off and you get stain like marking. The harder you try to clean with all types of cleaners just takes more finish off......Here is your solution and it has worked for me cause I called the factory.....clean your cook top with plain water and this will only work if it looks like stains NOT if you have cooked on food....Turtle Wax for cars....you know the kind that you smear a small patch on ,let it haze, then polish the dickens out of it.The factory said this should be done every 3 months. Wonderful little trick that should be in all manuals but then you wouldn't order new tops or buy new stoves!!!!
  • Marilynn Joy Marilynn Joy on Mar 25, 2016
So Mary ,did you try the turtle wax trick ?My surface was smooth also but looked stained...I had no cooked on food. Did the turtle car wax ,let it haze then polished it like a crazy person ...it worked for me.In fact I do that about every 6 weeks now

Hey Mary,Love your cat!!I think he's Canadian,he looks so mellow.I'll tell you another tip and glass top stoves. I have one cloth to clean my stove .It's called an Ultimate Cloth,You don't use anything but water to clean "anything".I have one of those designer ones that look like an old wood stoves .That stove has only see the cream cleaner and water using this cloth.Everyone laughs about how "touchy "I am about my stove but she is 9 years old and doesn't look over a month old.The Ultimate Cloths are wonderful.....they clean windows, mirrors anything with just water. No polishing or wiping down with paper towel.Streakfree !!!!And no it's not my company .Just love the product. And love my appliances
  • Mary Insana Mary Insana on Mar 28, 2016
I'll have to look into that. I've never seen the Ultimate Cloth around her. And as for my kitty, he's a Russian Blue and he is one of the sweetest cats we have very had. Had 3 cats and a dog, our Persian passed away 2 years ago. 😢 We only Squeaky our grey cat, Louie an all black cat and Bo-Bo our Westie dog.

After several month's experience with the range, I have seen a number of similar areas on the other burners. It appears to be a wearing away of the top layer of the gray grid material every time the surface is cleaned. I noticed this wherever a stain occured and was cleaned with the recommended cleaner (the one that came as a sample with the range). The lighter gray areas are growing the more the range is used. Less than a year old and LG says it is cosmetic and not covered by warranty. :(

  • Wendy Wendy on Jan 06, 2019

Bought a Frigidaire Gallery slide in range with glass cooktop. We followed the directions to clean top prior to use and clean surface with Weiman's Cooktop cleaner after each use. Therefore, so upset that within 3 months, a white ring/spot has appeared in the middle of one of the burners. We've tried cleaning as usual, used razor blade and tried baking soda cleaning trick, all to no avail. The spot (and several surrounding spots) appear to be beneath the glass and not on top where I can get at them to clean. I am worried that the same problem will occur if I get the top replaced. After reading above posts, has anyone else figured out the solution? Thanks!

So far I, the original commenter has not figured this out. Just like you I’ve pretty much tried everything including goggling remedies. My husband who is not handy at all suggested we take the top off and see if it can be cleaned underneath. I may just do it some day when he’s at work, 😂 he gets in my way when I’m fixing something 😂

  • Faye Faye on Mar 18, 2019

my stove came from sears and when it happened to my stove I called them they said that it was a cosmetic thing and so it is not covered by the warranty and it does not affect how the stove works, they told me that it is a "flaw" in the design and nothing can be done about it.

    • Frances Frances on May 29, 2019

I bought mine in 2010 from Sears. Got the black mark I feel the glass. Had a warranty and Sears replaced the glasstop. Kept up with the warranty. It happened again and Sesrs replaced it again. I didn't keep up with the warranties any longer at $79 a year. I kept the old glass tops in the basement as the spots on those two were only a quarter-size. Now the third top is real bad with marks all over. I might consider switching out with one of the old ones were the mark is not that bad. But I don't know how much it would cost for labor or if my husband can do it. I think those marks are caused by having the setting on high for too long which my husband likes to put it on high

  • Patricia Patricia on Aug 05, 2019

Have no answers. Just a question of my own , Bought a preowned white top Frigidaire stand alone stove. As soon as I turn the burners on and they get hot, spots begin showing up. Bought a cleaner kit at Lowe's, and have used it repeatedly. Even when it looks half way clean, the minute I turn it on and cook something, other stains/burn marks show up. No matter how much I clean it, this happens. Concerned about safety. Is there a way to take the top up or off without calling a professional. Have not used the oven, but will soon to see if it has any problems. We bought large appliances from a person who was replacing all of his major ones. Did not know this was an issue until I started to cook. Have not been able to find any help online so far. If this stove is dangerous to use, I want to know. My hubby and I are in our late 70's and early 80's, and we do not want to burn the house down with a defective stove. Help.

I have the same problem and my stove is only a couple of years old. When I run my hand over the glass, it feels clean, yet there is obviously something there and I have tried magic eraser, hot towel with the baking soda, vinegar and dawn mixture and the cleaner made specifically for the stove top. IT's so frustrating!

  • Pat Pat on Jan 12, 2020

This is interesting. I have had a GE glass top range and it is at least 25 years old. We cook on it every day and so far no problems or spots. I use the cleaning white lotion made for glass top ranges and also a razor blade held at a slant for getting off the burned on food. I guess I am lucky. Good luck to finding a solution for your problems. Could it be your pans? We use Corning Ware pans and ocasionally T-fal. The only thing I am particuliar about is when I make candy because the hot syrupy mixture will etch the glass stop top if it splashes out..

Hey everyone! Honestly I have paid a lot on so many different cleaners and polishes. I almost just bought a new stove because I was so sick of looking at it and nothing seemed to get the stuff off my stove top. So after reading ALOT online and trying different methods I did the vinegar and baking soda really thick Let it sit for a half hour and used a razor to clean it. Wipe it with a warm wet wash cloth and then I made a paste out of bar keepers friend and it made a HUGE difference. Didn’t completely get my scratches out but it seemed to help a lot.

Thanks so much - we have a rental property and the hob was new in 2 years ago. When the old lady moved out she left the hob with stuff stuck on and this white, crackled haze which seemed to be on the underside of the glass. Followed your advice and it’s almost back to brand new now! So pleased 😀

i have the same problem and I’ve read all the post. Just cleaned my glass top stove to no avail. However the post from Koral Easley struck a bell in my head. I made sure all Burt stuff was scraped off, then I made a paste of baking soda and vinegar on a scrubbing pad and scrubbed on burner with this. Went over several time with medium pressure and It worked. Even the cloudy type stains were gone. Now I’m going to do my entire stove top and see what happens. Possible chemical reaction with vinegar and baking soda.

I previously always used bar keepers friend. So go and I found this, s post.

Well I’m back. After cleaning my entire stove top for the 2 nd time today, it does look better using the mixture if baking soda and vinegar, however still not as the manufacturer says. I’m 68 and purchased all new appliances three years ago and have determined that men have been the engineer on most of these

their not worried how much time a woman has to spend cooking, cleaning washing, just as long as they can sell their new inventions to the consumer.

if I live long enough to have to replace, I definitely will go back to the old type of appliance even if I have to go to second hand place to purchase. Lol

This happened to me. Started as a white hue underneath the glass. Beware! Small cracks slowly appeared under the surface of glass then one night after cooking and turning it off, they extended and came to the surface. My landlord tried to blame me and claim money for a new unit but i did my own investigating. I hadn't dropped anything on it and simply used it to cook! I spoke with the manufacturer and sent photos. Because there is a white hue under the glass where it cracked by itself, they believe the heat sensor has failed, causing the element to overheat and cause the initial crack. This makes perfect sense as the white hue is underneath the glass also. This is covered by warranty. If you ever see the white hue or cracks underneath the glass that appear, take photos/ videos as this is more proof it is not an impact crack. It is very important to document any damage as there are several reasons a cooktop like this could crack and it's very expensive to replace and incredibly frustrating to do so when you are not at fault!
