If it is real wood it should work. If particle board not sure if screws will hold, but let's see a pic so we can figure it out! If you should us a pic of the inside and broken plastic we might be able to suggest a drawer repair.
Yes, I have!! We just cut them down the middle and put a 1 by 2 across the back and then added hinges.

As long as you make the cut perfectly straight it would probably not be difficult to do.

If you cut them you will have a gap the width of your saw blade. You can very easily screw a small block of wood (2 to each drawer) to the back of each drawer so they can't fall out.
